John Romley, PhD's Bio

John Romley, PhD, is an associate professor in the USC Price School of Public Policy and the USC Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, an economist at the USC Schaeffer Center and an adjunct economist at the RAND Corporation. He participated in the first nationwide study of disparities in alcohol retailing in urban neighborhoods, with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. He was also a co-investigator in an Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality–funded study that identified, categorized and evaluated efficiency measures in healthcare.

In other recent work, Romley has been assessing competition among hospitals in quality of care and patient satisfaction, with support from the National Institute on Aging as well as a leading hospital system. He led a study, funded by the Hewlett Foundation, of the impact of air quality on hospital spending. Finally, he has led Department of Defense-funded studies of best practices and costs at pharmacies and of the financial performance of military treatment facilities. He is the managing editor of Forum for Health Economics & Policy.

He earned his PhD in economics from Stanford University.
