Joel Freedman's Bio
Joel Freedman is president and founder of Paladin. He is also president and co-founder of Avanti Hospitals, which owns and operates four hospitals in South and East Los Angeles, and manages Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C. In these roles, Freedman is responsible for setting the strategic direction of all aspects of business.
Prior to establishing Avanti, Freedman served as managing partner of Paladin Capital, an investment-banking firm where he completed more than $800 million of healthcare transactions. With more than 25 years of experience in the areas of capital strategy and implementation, mergers and acquisitions, and business reorganizations, he has been involved in the analysis, structuring and implementation of more than 175 transactions totaling more than $3 billion. In 2004, he co-founded CompWest Insurance Company, an innovative California-based workers compensation insurance company that was sold in 2007 to Accident Fund Insurance Company of America, a unit of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan.
Freedman is a founding member of the Healthcare Policy Advisory Council for Harvard Medical School, which is deeply involved in the transformation of the healthcare system at both a federal and state level. He is also a member of the boards of Children’s Bureau, one of the largest investors in child abuse prevention in the U.S., and the Foundation for AltaMed Health Services, the largest independent Federally Qualified Community Health Center operator in the country, serving more than 140,000 community members through 43 clinics in underserved communities throughout Los Angeles and Orange counties.
