Dr. Lawless's area of focus is in developing and managing the Master’s Program in Healthcare Decision Analysis (HCDA) at USC. This novel MS degree is part of an intensive, interdisciplinary program designed to train graduates from across the globe, with undergraduate educations in the sciences, professions, business, economics, and health policy, as well as industry professionals seeking to improve their technical skills and analytical abilities. Healthcare decision analysis is a newly emerging branch of applied healthcare research that focuses on the intersection of healtheconomics, applied health policy and insurance design, and competitive business intelligence and pricing.

Prior to joining the faculty at USC, Dr. Lawless held positions as Executive Director for National Accounts and Payer Markets, Executive and Medical Director for Managed Care Marketing and Director of Healtheconomics and Outcomes Research at Amgen. Prior to joining Amgen, he served as Vice President for Medical and Pharmacy Affairs for Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Lawless is an author or co-author of articles appearing in Cancer, Oncology, Clinical Lymphoma, Oncology Economics, Health Affairs, American Journal of Managed Care, American Journal of Medical Quality, Journal of Managed Care Pharmacy, Healtheconomics, and Benefits Quarterly.     

Dr. Lawless’s professional experience is in Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine and is Board Certified and Fellow in Internal Medicine, Quality Assurance and Utilization Review, as well as Addiction Medicine.  He is also a Registered Pharmacist with specialty certification in Nuclear Medicine.  He is a graduate of the University of New Mexico and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at University of Pittsburgh and St. Francis Health System in Pittsburgh, PA.
